Name the Bookmobile

This year as part of National Library Week, Meriden Public Library will be celebrating National Bookmobile Day on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 by having a “Name the Bookmobile” contest. This contest is open to all ages and will run to the end of April. The most creative name will be written on the Bookmobile. Entries for the contest may be picked up in the library near the circulation desk and in the children’s library.

Bookmobiles have been around since 1859 bringing books to many people and encouraging literacy all over the world. Meriden has had a bookmobile since 1976. The first bookmobile was loaned from the Connecticut State Library. In 1977, the Soroptimists Club decided to hold a fund drive to purchase a bookmobile for Meriden. Their goal was reached in 1980 and the library’s second bookmobile arrived. This bookmobile traveled the Meriden streets until 2000, when it was retired due to mechanical problems. The current bookmobile was purchased in 2002 and continues to encourage literacy by visiting many nursery schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, and parks on a regular basis.  The bookmobile’s monthly schedule can be found at www.meridenlibrary.org. Contact the Community Services Department at (203) 630-6349 for more information about how the bookmobile can visit your facility
